Know your audience
With my new job I'm in a lot of discussions with customers on how they manage and protect their data. The discussions range from those who have little grasp to a nearly complete grasp on their infrastructure.
The biggest thing I've struggled with is switching gears with customers who are at different levels of understanding. I'm getting much better at it though and have slowed discussions down so we're on the same wavelength more often than not.
It always seems to boil down to:
a) Don't be judgemental (especially early on)
b) Don't pretend to know things you don't
c) Continually adjust your approach to meet the other party's style
